Several TSBs address an intermittent grinding/clicking/ratcheting noise from the front wheels in 2WD mode, especially on acceleration. This noise is usually caused by partial engagement of the IWEs due to loss of vacuum or worn components.
To correct this issue, Ford technicians are directed to remove and cap the vacuum supply line to the IWEs.
Capping the vacuum line and keeping the hubs locked may lead to a slight decrease in fuel mileage and potentially increased front tire wear due to the constant rotation of the axles and IWEs.
This is a temporary solution and does not address the underlying issue. It's crucial to diagnose the root cause of the IWE problem and address it with proper repairs or replacement of faulty components like the solenoid, vacuum lines, or actuators.
This modification replaces the problematic IWE actuators with machined steel sleeves that permanently lock the CV axles into the hubs, essentially performing the "cap off" function with a durable mechanical solution.
This option also provides a fixed hub design, ensuring constant engagement of the front axle and eliminating the vacuum-actuated IWE system.
